Football Coach Snaps Peas

No more whistle or trap block drills,
nor sunburns or huddles.

Not long ago he clapped often,
a double let's go clap, then

watch the boys jog out half-speed,
into the lights and midglory Friday

night. It's Sunday, just home
from church. His wife is folding

tip towels, and he sits, aimless,
snapping peas, running through

the game pod for play, the edge
of his nail digging into each,

whistles going off inside his head,
a bowl of disgarded hulls.

  1. Nice image. What are tip towels?

  2. A tip towel is another name for a dish towel. Also called a tea towel or hand towel. "Tip" I think refers to fingertip. Thanks for the comments!
